Unfortunately for the Tennessee Volunteers, it sounds like baseball coach Tony Vitello is heading to the majors.
Back in late September, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic mentioned Vitello as a potential candidate for the San Francisco Giants. The front office fired manager Bob Melvin after a “disappointing and frustrating” season where they went 81-81.
“Here’s one out-of-the-box name who fits the high-motor description: Tony Vitello, who transformed the University of Tennessee from a bottom-feeder in the Southeastern Conference into perhaps the brashest and most talented program in the country,” Baggarly said. “It’s possible that Vitello and Posey have already spoken; both were at Coors Field when the Giants played a three-game series against the Rockies earlier this month.”
Well, it sounds like Vitello is heading to the Bay Area.
According to The Athletic, the Giants are “closing in” on making Vitello their next manager.
