Rain delays are somewhat unavoidable for some MLB teams, particularly those on the East Coast and Midwest of the United States. However, there are several Major League teams — particularly ones that play in either rainy or hot, or both, climates — that don’t have to worry about rain delays. That is because nearly one-third of the teams across MLB have either a retractable or fixed roof.

This list has changed over the years. Texas joined the list of teams to have either a permanent or retractable roof in 2020 when Globe Life Field opened. The Rangers previously called The Ballpark at Arlington, now known as Choctaw Park, home, which was an open-air field.

Miami moved into loanDepot Park in 2012 after leaving Pro Player Stadium, now known as Hard Rock Stadium. Hard Rock Stadium was, and remains, an open-air stadium.

The Twins, meanwhile, called the Metrodome home for many years alongside the Minnesota Vikings. But after the 2009 campaign, the Twins left to open up Target Field.

It should be noted that the Rays are the only oddity among the eight teams listed above. Tampa Bay’s stadium, which is actually located in nearby St. Petersburg, is the only one not to have a retractable roof. Instead, it has a unique fiberglass roof that’s slanted and includes the much-criticized catwalks.

That fiberglass roof was destroyed in October 2024 during Hurricane Milton. It forced the Rays to relocate and play at Steinbrenner Field in 2025, home of the Yankees’ Spring Training games and the Low-A Tampa Tarpons.
