The San Francisco Giants are moving toward hiring Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello as their next manager, The Athletic reported on Saturday.

While other media outlets confirmed that the move is trending in that direction, Vitello told Knox News on Saturday that “nothing is done.”

Vitello reportedly also had been in consideration for the managerial opening of the Atlanta Braves, who opted against bringing back Brian Snitker.

Vitello, 47, owns a 341-131 record in his eight seasons with the Volunteers, guiding the program to the College World Series in 2021, 2023 and 2024. Tennessee won the first national championship in program history in 2024.

The Giants fired Bob Melvin on Sept. 29 after two seasons as the club’s manager. Melvin posted an 81-81 record in 2025, which marked a one-win improvement from 2024.

The San Francisco Giants finished third in the National League West in 2025, 12 games behind the division-winning Los Angeles Dodgers and nine back of the playoff-bound San Diego Padres. They were two games out of the NL’s final wild-card spot.

The San Francisco Giants will be in the market for a new manager this offseason, but don’t expect to see Bruce Bochy making his patented stroll to the mound for the first pitching change of the 2026 season.

During his end-of-season press conference, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said that San Francisco has been in touch with the four-time World Series-winning manager, but added that Bochy is not part of the current search for a new skipper.

Bochy, 70, recently parted ways with the Texas Rangers following three seasons with the ballclub. The longtime Giants manager brought the Rangers their first World Series title in 2023, but missed the postseason in each of the past two seasons.

San Francisco is currently looking to replace Bob Melvin, who was excused from his position on Monday following back-to-back subpar seasons that saw the Giants’ playoff drought extend to four seasons.

Since an impressive run that included four Playoff appearances and three World Series championships from 2010 through 2016, the Giants have made the playoffs just once since the 2017 season (2021).
