Ex-Red Sox DH/third baseman Rafael Devers was inconsistent after Boston traded him to the Giants in a shocking blockbuster deal June 15.
Devers batted .236 with a .347 on-base percentage, .460 slugging percentage, .807 OPS, 20 home runs, 15 doubles, 51 RBIs, 52 runs, 56 walks and 116 strikeouts in 90 games (395 plate appearances).
He played 28 games at first base for San Francisco after refusing to play the position for Boston. He played pretty well there with two defensive runs saved in 249 innings.
He also started 60 games at DH and one game at third base.
Devers was a below-average defender at third base during his time in Boston. He had negative-61 defensive runs saved in 8,277 â…” career innings there.
His .807 OPS was down 98 points from his .905 OPS in 73 games (334 plate appearances) with Boston to begin the season. He also had a higher bWAR with Boston (2.3) than San Francisco (1.8) in 17 fewer games.
He immediately struggled with the Giants, batting .219 with a .327 on-base percentage, .365 slugging percentage, .692 OPS in 37 games (162 plate appearances) from June 17-July 30.
During that stretch, San Francisco went from 41-31 and one and a half games ahead in the second NL Wild Card spot to 54-55 (.495) and six games out of the final Wild Card.
Devers heated up in August, batting .291 with a .397 on-base percentage, .592 slugging percentage and .989 OPS in 28 games (121 plate appearances).
San Francisco was still one game under .500 at the end of August and five games behind for the final Wild Card spot despite Devers’ surge.
Devers struggled again in September, batting .200 with a .321 on-base percentage, .453 slugging percentage and .774 in 25 games (112 plate appearances).
San Francisco finished 81-81 and missed the playoffs by 12 games in the NL West standings and two games in the NL Wild Card standings.
