KANSAS CITY, Mo. – North Kansas City continues to be one of the main locations discussed as a site for a new Royals stadium.

In August of 2023, the Royals displayed renderings of the ballpark in North Kansas City near 18th Street and Fayette Avenue.

Back in April of this year, Missouri State Senator Maggie Nurrenbern—who also represents Clay County in the state legislature—said there have been close conversations with the Royals about a new ballpark in NKC.

Most recently, on Tuesday, NKC Mayor Jesse Smith released a statement on the ongoing conversations with the Royals about a new stadium:

“The City of North Kansas City continues to have conversations with the Kansas City Royals regarding the possibility of a stadium and related development in North Kansas City. These discussions are substantial and will ultimately involve collaboration among the State of Missouri, Clay County, and the City in any final framework. A portion of these discussions will need to be kept confidential for a limited time period.

As Mayor, I remain committed to transparency throughout this process and want to share the priorities I have consistently communicated on behalf of our community:

Protecting Our City’s Long-Term Financial Health
Any agreement must be fair and beneficial for North Kansas City, our residents, businesses, and the Royals. It must be a true win-win-win.

Safeguarding Our Neighborhoods
We are committed to ensuring that game-day operations, including traffic and parking, do not spill into residential neighborhoods North of Armour.

Leveraging Investment for Community Infrastructure
The Royals project must serve as a catalyst for citywide improvements. We have master plans for upgrading water, sewer, and other infrastructure systems. If this project moves forward, it will bring outside funding to support the long-term infrastructure investments our community needs.

Engaging Our Community and Region
If a framework for a deal is reached, clear and open communication with North Kansas City residents and businesses, as well as the entire Clay County community, will be essential. We will prioritize genuine and ongoing engagement with residents, businesses, and stakeholders.

It is an honor to serve as your mayor. I will continue working on your behalf and will keep you updated throughout the process.“

If a new ballpark were built in the Northland, it would be owned by Clay County. The Missouri State Senate approved a bill earlier this year allowing Clay County to build a sports complex similar to the one in Jackson County.
