The Boston Red Sox made a fantastic trade last winter when they traded with the New York Yankees to acquire catcher Carlos Narváez.

After playing in only six games last season for the Yankees, Narváez had a great rookie campaign for the Red Sox. The 26-year-old catcher slashed .241/.306/.419 with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs in his rookie season, solidifying his starting role for the Red Sox as Connor Wong took a significant step back.

Though Wong remains a relatively cheap option to be Boston’s backup catcher next season, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo proposed that a reunion with two-time World Series champion Christian Vázquez could be in the cards this winter as a backup catcher replacement.

“There’s a small chance, though, that the Red Sox have their sights set on someone on the free agent market as an improvement on the backup spot — especially if defense is a priority — and therefore Wong could be in jeopardy, either through a non-tender or a trade,” Cotillo wrote Wednesday. “There aren’t many great options out there behind top free agent J.T. Realmuto. Old friends Christian Vázquez and Danny Jansen are among the free agents.

“It’ll likely be a quiet winter when it comes to moves behind the plate after Narváez’s rookie surge was one of the most encouraging storylines of 2025. There will be a depth addition or two, like there always are. If Vázquez is available on a minor league contract, his still-strong relationship with Alex Cora could lead to a reunion come spring.”

After spending over seven seasons with the Red Sox and winning the World Series in 2018, Vázquez was traded to the Houston Astros just in time to win the World Series again in 2022. The 35-year-old catcher has spent the past three seasons with the Minnesota Twins, but is set to be a free agent this offseason.

Vázquez has steadily appeared in fewer games each of the past three seasons for the Twins. He may not be the same player he was when he used to play in Boston, but a Red Sox reunion would offer the team a reliable backup option to Narváez next season.
