Tony Vitello was introduced as San Francisco’s 40th manager all time in MLB on Thursday. He replaces Bob Melvin.
Vitello served as Tennessee’s baseball head coach from 2018-25.
He compiled a 341–131 (125–85 SEC) record with the Vols, winning one national championship, two SEC regular season championships and two SEC Tournament titles. Tennessee also appeared in the College World Series three times during his tenure.
Vitello wore jersey No. 22 at Tennessee and is No. 23 with the Giants.
“To leave where I was at was not easy,” Vitello said during his introductory press conference. “It had to be a certain set of circumstances that would even be considered, and ultimately what this was about was, some personal introspective, two words that I diagnosed were risk and challenge, and they both are kind of the same thing.”
The 2026 MLB season will open with Vitello and the Giants. San Francisco will host the Yankees on March 25, 2026 at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California.
