The Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft began in 1965.
* Etter was originally drafted out of Chambersburg Area Senior High School in 1967 by the Pittsburgh Pirates (fifth round) but instead attended Shippensburg University. In 1968, he was selected in the fourth round of the June (secondary phase) draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, who at the time, were the Seattle Pilots.
**Â In January 1981, Dave Corman was selected in the first round (25th overall pick) by the Baltimore Orioles. Corman was a second baseman for the Raiders in 1980 who transferred to Hagerstown Community College, from where he was selected in the First-Year Player Draft.
*** A number of Raiders have signed professional contracts, including pitcher Nathan Starner (2006, Toronto Blue Jays), first baseman Andy Dangler (2004, Minnesota Twins), catcher Jeremy Glessner (2002, Colorado Rockies), pitcher Greg Jeffries (1985), pitcher Leon Hoke (1980, Baltimore Orioles), shortstop Dale Delise (1978, San Francisco Giants), first baseman J.P. O’Connor (1978, Chicago Cubs), catcher Frank Mastrangelo (1974. Kansas City Royals) and pitcher Joe Persiponko (1957, Philadelphia Phillies).
**** The only known Shippensburg alumnus to play in an MLB game is Clyde Barnhart, who had a nine-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1920-28. He has the distinction of being the only player in MLB history to have a hit in three different games on the same day, achieving the feat in a tripleheader Oct. 2, 1920 (just 10 days after he made his MLB debut).
