The San Francisco 49ers needed a win in Week 9 over the New York Giants and they came up with a strong performance against the New York Giants on the road at MetLife Stadium.

The 49ers took a 17-7 lead into halftime and kept New York at arm’s length the rest of the way. Any time their offense faltered, their defense stepped up and got a stop. When their defense struggled, the offense answered with points. It was a nice all-around victory for San Francisco that moves them to 6-3 heading into a crucial NFC West showdown with the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10.

How to watch 49ers vs. Giants

Jones wasn’t as good in the second half as he was in the first half, but he still put together a very good game. He completed 19-of-24 throws for 235 yards and two touchdowns. It looked like he threw an interception at the end of the first half, but the NFL ruled it a fumble to keep his passing line clean.

After a slow Week 8 showing, McCaffrey shined against New York. He ran 28 times for 106 yards and a touchdown. He also caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers needed their superstar RB to have a good game and he came through in a big way.

Two Christian McCaffrey carries and a Brian Robinson carry were enough for a first down. Adrian Martinez took his first ever NFL snap to kneel down for the game’s final play. The 49ers move to 6-3.

The Giants needed a miracle to comeback against San Francisco. Their onside kick after the TD rolled to Jauan Jennings who covered it up. The 49ers took over at the Giants’ 48 and they can end the game with a first down.

The 49ers defense fell asleep late in Sunday’s game. Instead of getting a stop and ending the game, they allowed a TD and gave New York a little bit of life.

Williams stayed down late in the fourth quarter after getting a hit on Giants QB Jaxson Dart. He was pounding his helmet with his hands and grabbing at his right knee. He eventually walked off under his own power, but that is not what the 49ers want to see from yet another defensive linemen, much less their rookie No. 11 overall pick.

McCaffrey plowed in from three yards out for his second score of the game. Not only did it put San Francisco ahead 34-17, it also pushed McCaffrey to 16 games with one rushing and one receiving touchdown in his career. That’s the most all-time as he passes former Rams running back Marshall Faulk for the most all-time. With under five minutes to play that TD should just about do it.

San Francisco’s defense was having a tremendous outing, but it appears they took their foot off the gas after the 49ers offense put them ahead 27-10. A stop on the ensuing drive would’ve effectively ended the game. Instead, New York needed only seven plays to go 65 yards with Dart capping the drive with a six-yard rushing touchdown. He’s up to 46 rushing yards on seven carries.

The 49ers gave Christian McCaffrey some plays off and Robinson took advantage of the extended playing time. He went five yards on his first carry, then 10 yards on the next play, and 18 yards for a touchdown on the next play. His TD run was impressive with a huge broken tackle to spring him to the end zone. If the 49ers get that kind of running from Robinson we may see him get more playing time over the second half of the year.

San Francisco took a 20-7 lead and the Giants inexplicably settled for a field goal at the 49ers’ 3-yard line midway through the quarter. The 49ers are nearing midfield to start the fourth quarter. A touchdown on this possession would likely put the game away. Even a field goal would make it a steep uphill climb for the Giants.

The 49ers certainly didn’t expect Okuayinonu to be a key starter for them on the defensive line this season, but that’s the role he’s been thrust into due to injury. He was close to a couple of sacks during Sunday’s game, and he finally came up with one late in the third quarter when he was able to turn the corner against New York’s right tackle and get QB Jaxson Dart on the ground.

New York’s offense came to life on their first offensive series of the third quarter. They needed eight plays to go 64 yards and got to a first-and-goal at the 49ers’ 9. San Francisco’s defense did a nice job in the red zone and forced a fourth-and-goal at the the 3 thanks to a nice open-field tackle by safety Malik Mustapha. New York elected to kick a field goal to make it 20-10, which means they’ll still need two touchdowns to win the game. That was a head-scratching decision by head coach Brian Daboll.

A touchdown to open the third quarter would have given the 49ers full control of their Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants. They got as deep as the New York 11, but they went backward three yards on first down before a pair of incompletions by Mac Jones stalled the drive. Eddy Pineiro converted his 19th field goal in as many tries as a 49er and they took a 13-point lead with 9:55 to play in the third quarter.

Wow. San Francisco turned it over inside their own 30 just before the half, but the Giants couldn’t capitalize. New York ran for no gain on first down and then two incomplete passes led to a 45-yard field goal try that Giants kicker Graham Gano pulled wide left. The 49ers will get the ball to start the third quarter with a chance to take control of the game with a score to open the second half.

What a nightmare for the 49ers. They forced the Giants to punt after Pineiro’s field goal put the 49ers up 10. On their first play, Mac Jones was hit as he threw and the toss floated into the air where rookie DE Abdul Carter hauled it in for what was ruled a fumble recovery. The 49ers just needed to run out the clock to go into the half up 10, but instead the Giants get the ball inside the 49ers 30 with a chance to cut into the lead before halftime.

The 49ers pushed their lead to two scores with a long field goal from Pineiro who continues his perfect start with the 49ers. He’s now 18-for-18 overall, including six-for-six from beyond 50 yards. His low, line drive kick just snuck over the crossbar and put the 49ers ahead 17-7 with 1:59 to go in the first half.

The 49ers pass rush has had a tough time getting pressure on the quarterback the last few weeks, but recently-signed Clelin Ferrell made his presence known in his first game back with the club. On a second-and-7 he showed off his high motor and after getting pushed past the pocket, made his way back to hit Giants QB Jackson Dart from behind for a five-yard loss that put the Giants in a third-and-12. They eventually punted and San Francisco’s defense has bounced back in a big way after its tough start.

San Francisco’s offensive game plan against the Giants has worked to perfection to open Sunday’s game. They’ve racked up 153 yards on 20 plays with touchdowns on both of their drives. Their second series lasted eight plays. They travelled 80 yards and Mac Jones hit Jauan Jennings on a third-and-5 throw for an 11-yard touchdown to cap it. Jones has been excellent with completions on all 10 of his throws, but they’re mostly quick, easy throws designed to combat a very good Giants pass rush.

San Francisco stabilized after its rough defensive start to Sunday’s game. They got a score, then a three-and-out, and they closed the first quarter at New York’s 37 in the midst of a four-play, 43-yard drive. Christian McCaffrey had nine touches for 53 yards in the quarter, and Mac Jones was a perfect seven-for-seven for 59 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers evened Sunday’s game with a quick response after the Giants’ opening TD. They went 68 yards on 12 plays and capped the series with a Mac Jones touchdown pass to a wide open McCaffrey who slipped out of the backfield uncovered to walk in for his easiest score as a 49er. Jones went six-for-six for 47 yards and a touchdown. McCaffrey racked up seven touches for 33 yards and a score. It’s tied at 7 with 4:16 left in the first quarter.

San Francisco brought Spencer Burford off IR for Week 9 and he immediately stepped in as the starting left guard, a position rookie seventh-round pick Connor Colby held down since LG Ben Bartch went down in Week 2.

San Francisco’s defense was dreadful against the Houston Texans in Week 8, and that continued in Week 9 vs. the Giants. New York went 64 yards in 10 plays on their opening drive and only faced one third down. Giants TE Theo Johnson embarrassed 49ers CB Deommodore Lenoir en route to a 15-yard touchdown to cap the Giants’ opening series. The Giants lead 7-0 with 10:50 left in the first quarter.

The Giants have a good defensive front, but they’re not a particularly strong run defense. If the 49ers can get their run game going they should be able to take advantage of New York’s secondary and win what might become a shootout. One thing to watch out for: if the 49ers can’t get their run game going and they’re forced to drop back against New York’s defensive line, it could be a long day for their offense. 49ers 23, Giants 2049ers injury updatesOL Ben Bartch (ankle), OutOL Jake Brendel (hamstring), OutDE Yetur Gross-Matos (knee, hamstring), OutDE Bryce Huff (hamstring), OutWR Ricky Pearsall (knee), OutOL Spencer Burford (knee), QuestionableDT Jordan Elliott (ankle, personal matter), QuestionableDE Sam Okuayinonu (ankle), QuestionableQB Brock Purdy (toe), Questionable49ers schedule 2025
