Walt Weiss’ substantial Major League Baseball career – from a Rookie of the Year to a world champion player and coach – has entered another baseball chapter.
On Monday, the Atlanta Braves named Weiss as their new manager, taking over for Brian Snitker, who retired last month.
A 1982 graduate of Suffern (N.Y.) High School in Rockland County, and a 1985 first-round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics out of the University of North Carolina, Weiss had served as Atlanta’s bench coach for the past eight seasons.
Weiss, 61, previously managed the Colorado Rockies from 2013-16, and he’s served on the Braves’ staff since 2018 – which included a World Series title in 2021.
The American League’s Rookie of the Year in 1988, Weiss played shortstop on three straight Oakland Athletics pennant winners under Hall of Fame manager Tony LaRussa, with their lone world championship arriving in 1989.
Weiss also played with the Rockies, Marlins and Braves over a 14-year MLB career, concluding in 2000, playing for another Hall of Fame manager in Atlanta’s Bobby Cox.
At Suffern High, the Mounties play at “Walt Weiss Field.”
