The San Francisco Giants designated right-handed pitcher Mason Black for assignment Thursday.
The move was made to clear a 40-man roster spot after the Giants made successful waiver claims for Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Justin Dean and Cincinnati Reds pitcher Reiver Sanmartin.
Black, a Valley View graduate, struggled at Triple-A Sacramento, as well as in his one appearance with this Giants this season. The 25-year-old had a 5.81 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP for the River Cats, striking out 114 and walking 62 in 119.1 innings this season. He appeared in one game in the Majors this season, allowing fived runs in four innings in a relief appearance for the Giants in a n 11-2 loss to the A’s on July 4.
Since debuting with the Giants in 2024, Black has a 6.47 ERA over 10 appearances (8 starts).
The former 3rd round pick in 2021 has one minor league option remaining. If he is not claimed by another team, the Giants can keep him by outrighting him to Triple-A Sacramento.
