Baseball tournament collects food donations for Central Texas families

  • November 9, 2025

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – A baseball tournament in Killeen is collecting donations for families in need as part of KWTX’s Food for Families drive.

Worm Burner Tournaments is partnering with Dinger Disciples to use their baseball tournament to make an impact beyond the diamond. The Food for Families benefit made its return in Killeen after a six-year absence.

“We’re finally back. This is our first time back in about 6 years. About 6 years ago, we did over 10,000 pounds for three years straight. So, this is a big deal,” said Jeffrey Poston of Worm Burner Tournaments.

Each of the 50 teams in the tournament is challenged to make the largest donation for KWTX’s Food for Families drive. Teams can bring non-perishable food items and cash donations, with prizes awarded to the teams that bring the most food.

“There’s three winners: 1,000, 500, and 250. That will go towards umpire credit for the spring season,” Poston said.

Jack Poston counts and sorts each donation. With one day remaining in the tournament, some teams have already made progress toward the 10,000-pound goal.

“I’ve been putting it in categories for each team. This is the winner right here, so far, they’ve put 358, the other team over here has put about 180,” Jack Poston said.

The two biggest donors have brought 358 and 180 items each. For cash donations, each dollar given counts as two items.

The tournament continues through Sunday at Lions Club Park in Killeen. Earlier this year, Worm Burner Tournaments hosted benefits for multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.
