In a rematch of last year’s championship baseball game, defending champion Father Duenas Memorial School Friars and Notre Dame High School Royals competed on Saturday at Guam High School in Agana Heights.
The Royals plated three runners in their half of the first inning, and never looked back. And with starting pitcher Derrin Gumataotao on the mound for the Royals, Notre Dame defeated Father Duenas 3-2.
The Royals’ runs were scored by Ty Leon Guerrero, Trace Taijeron and Nate Cruz.
With Juan Carlo Presnell on the mound for the Friars, who was later replaced by Pierce Castro, the Friars scored one run in the third inning when Gavin Alcantara crossed home plate. Father Duenas added one more run in the top of the seventh inning, but Reef Balajadia’s trip past home plate only chipped away at the lead.
Throughout the seven-inning contest, Gumataotao’s poise showed, and the hurler notched his second strike out and recorded outs on Alcantara and Kole Guerrero.
Although the Friars’ bats were not able to get it done, their two pitchers recorded seven strikeouts impressively.
