Brandon Woodruff

Just a few days ago, some news around Brandon Woodruff came out regarding his free agency status. While there’s a lot of speculation out there right now, we’ll be breaking down why the Miami Marlins should look to sign Woodruff.

Joey Peterson of Just Baseball did a great job of breaking down the situation in one of his most recent articles. Peterson explained that, “Woodruff’s free agency got a bit more interesting when the Brewers extended him a qualifying offer…While a one-year deal isn’t what he’s seeking, there’s a compelling argument for Woodruff…type of frontline profile may be enough for a team to commit a multi-year deal to Woodruff”

Even at 32 years old, there’s a good chance that Woodruff will be able to get his wish from at least one MLB team. There’s a good chance that Woodruff could return to the Milwaukee Brewers, but in this scenario, we’ll be looking at the Marlins.

This is a PREDICTION, not a REPORT.

Brandon Woodruff Joining Miami Marlins in MLB Free Agency

The concerning part with Woodruff is that he’s yet to pitch in over 13 games since 2022. Now, to be fair, the production for Woodruff has never really taken a steep decline.

Even in 2025, Woodruff had a 1.2 WAR, a 7-2 record, and a 3.20 ERA. With that being said, 2022 was significantly better for Woodruff.

That year, Woodruff had a 3.0 WAR, a 13-4 record, and a 3.05 ERA. The year before that, Woodruff had the best year of his career, where he made the All-Star game but also finished 5th in the NL Cy Young Voting.

To spend some more time on how Woodruff looked in 2025, though, here’s what his Baseball Savant page shows. The numbers for Woodruff were phenomenal last year.

Woodruff was in the 81st percentile for his Pitching Run Value, 80th for Fastball Run Value, 14th for Breaking Run Value, but 96th for Offspeed Run Value.

How Brandon Woodruff Fits with the Miami Marlins

The Marlins are coming off a year where they missed the playoffs, but it’s evident this team is on the rise. Keep in mind that in 2024, the Marlins won just 62 games.

While the Marlins aren’t in a spot to go all in, signing a pitcher who’s 32 years old makes sense for this organization. Edward Cabrera, who’s still 27 years old, struggled a bit in 2025, and he’s expected to be the Marlins’ number two.

In 2025, Cabrera had a 3.53 ERA to go alongside having a Pitching Run Value in the 46th percentile. It wasn’t just Cabrera, though, as the Marlins’ projected ace (per Fangraphs), Sandy Alcantara, struggled as well.

Heading into 2025, Woodruff could very well take that top spot as the number one option if he’s able to stay healthy. Taking the pressure off Alcantara and Cabrera could significantly help out this Marlins rotation.

Having Woodruff, Alcantara, and Cabrera could absolutely help the Marlins turn things around in order to return to the playoffs in 2026.

Brandon Woodruff Stats

Two more extremely impressive stats from Woodruff in 2025 were his xERA and xBA. Last year, Woodruff had an xERA of 2.18 and an xBA of 0.172.

Now, to give some context on just how good this is, both of these numbers were in the 99th percentile via Baseball Savant. All things considered, there’s a strong argument for Brandon Woodruff heading back to Milwaukee, but if he decides to sign elsewhere, the Miami Marlins shouldn’t hesitate to give him a strong offer.
