Kevin Sherrington’s A La Carte
– Considering the Mavs’ miserable start, Luka Doncic’s MVP pace and a chant at games that’s practically become the city motto, SportsDay alum Marc Stein reports it’s “unavoidable at the highest levels” of the organization to consider firing Nico Harrison mid-season. If it helps, let me add this: Quentin Grimes, traded to the 76ers along with a second-round pick for Caleb Martin, is averaging 17.2 points, about 16 more than Martin, Dwight Powell’s seatmate. Grimes is also shooting 39.7% on 3s, which, on the team he left behind, would make him Jimmy Chitwood.
Mavericks
– Meanwhile, Mark Cuban tells DLLS he was supposed to retain rights to basketball decisions after the sale of the team, a notion the NBA disputes, as does common sense. Vegas people don’t pay $3.5 billion to watch their money burn.
– You know it’s going bad when even preternaturally nice guy Dirk Nowitzki can’t take it anymore, telling Amazon’s NBA on Prime, “They can’t shoot, they can’t make plays. Nobody can make shots. It’s tough to watch.”
– Best Mavs news since Cooper Flagg: Hiring Gina Miller, long-time Dallas media boss, to run communications. Even for someone with her skills, these Mavs will be a tough sell.
– Not only did the Rangers lead MLB in ERA, they won a Gold Glove for team defense, proof that even two out of three isn’t always good enough.
– Bruce Bochy hasn’t explained his exit from the Rangers, but this tells you all you need to know: He accepted a position as an adviser for the Giants, same gig he was offered by Chris Young.
– Story time: The Rangers’ new skipper, Skip Schumaker, tells our SportsDay Rangers podcast that he and his Cardinal teammates thought it was all over going into the ninth inning of Game 6 in 2011. Tony La Russa practically said so. Told his players to stick around and thank the fans after the Rangers’ win. Meanwhile, up in the pressbox, after the mother of all disasters had unfolded, yours truly consorted with teammates Tim Cowlishaw and Evan Grant to make sure that, unlike the Rangers, we had all our bases covered. Tim and Evan told me that what had just transpired only made a great World Series even better, and they couldn’t wait for Game 7. I gave them the same look I had for the waiter who asked me 50 years ago if he could get my date’s phone number. Then, in the same tone I use for my grandkids, I told them Rangers fans would not welcome Game 7 after blowing Game 6, and would write accordingly. History is on my side, I think. For the record, Schumaker says La Russa won’t remember saying what he did to his players, but facts are facts. Tim and Evan would likely say the same about our conversation, but you know different.
