Lancaster County native and former Manheim Township baseball standout Nick Kurtz was voted Major League Baseball’s American League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.Kurtz, nicknamed “Big Amish,” was a unanimous decision after hitting .290 with 36 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 90 runs scored in 117 games. After being selected No. 4 overall by the A’s in the 2024 draft, Kurtz made his MLB debut on April 23 after just 33 minor league appearances.Kurtz became the first rookie in MLB history to record four home runs in a single game against the Houston Astros on July 25. He is the 14th player to win the AL award by a unanimous vote and the second for the A’s, joining Mark McGwire (1987). Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony and A’s shortstop Jacob Wilson were the other finalists for the award. Kurtz also won the Silver Slugger award as the American League’s top hitting first baseman.
