PHOENIX – Though the idea that the Diamondbacks were “motivated” to move Ketel Marte was thrown out there, a deeper look suggests that those projected feelings don’t tell the full story.

Sure, there were trade whispers that emerged over his rough 2025 stretch and clubhouse friction.  But in fact, the organization showed a concrete commitment to him back in April with the six-year $116.5 million long-term extension, indicating Arizona wants him in the core, not as a disposable asset. 12SportsAZ’s Cameron Cox mentioned as well that teams always ask about big stars, though Arizona is not motivated to part ways with their star second baseman.

Check on the report that the #Dbacks are definitely motivated to trade All-Star 2B Ketel Marte. Teams always ask. They’re not highly motivated on moving him. Relationship got rocky last season, but it got repaired by the end. They do need more leadership in the clubhouse. pic.twitter.com/PQcldWPcff

Ketel Marte’s future in Arizona:

The actions speak louder than the rumors. The extension guarantees Marte a significant payout and keeps him through his prime years in Arizona.  From a strategic perspective, letting a star of his caliber walk would undermine long-term plans, especially after the club invested in other pieces around him. Locally, fans crave stability in a franchise that’s seen plenty of turnover; nationally, this becomes an example of a small-market team doubling down rather than cutting bait.

Emotionally and psychologically, this speaks to the healing of the relationship. After off-the-field issues caused some problems for Marte, how he feels about playing for Arizona hasn’t changed.  That’s meaningful for fans who have felt uncertainty, seeing their face-of-the-franchise step up and recommit goes a long way.
