Mason Black is headed to a new organization.

Five days after being designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants, the Valley View grad was acquired in a trade by the Kansas City Royals in exchange for fellow righthanded pitcher Logan Martin. The Royals first announced the deal on social media.

Black, who turns 26 on Dec. 10, was 3-10 with a 5.81 earned-run average this season for the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats. In 30 games (24 starts), he allowed 83 runs (77 earned) and 114 hits in 119.1 innings with 62 walks and 114 strikeouts, which ranked fifth in the Pacific Coast League. He also appeared in one game for the Giants on July 4 against the Athletics in relief of starter Justin Verlander. He gave up five runs (three earned) and five hits in four innings with no walks and five strikeouts in an 11-2 loss.

He was DFA’d by the Giants on Nov. 6 in order to clear space on the 40-man roster spot for the waiver claims of outfielder Justin Dean from the Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Reiver Sanmartin from the Cincinnati Reds.

Selected by the Giants out of Lehigh University in the third round in the 2021 Draft, Black made his major league debut for San Francisco on May 6, 2024, against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. He has appeared in 10 major-league games (eight starts) and is 1-5 with a 6.47 ERA. He has allowed 31 runs (29 earned) and 51 hits in 40.1 innings with 15 walks and 36 strikeouts.

Since the start of 2022, Black has 492 strikeouts in 439.1 innings in 103 minor-league games (97 starts) to lead all Giants farmhands over that span.

With one minor-league option remaining, the Royals can keep Black in Triple-A with the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Martin was Kansas City’s 12th-round draft pick in 2023 out of the University of Kentucky. This season, he pitched in High-A with the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Midwest League. He has an 8-4 record with a 3.74 ERA. In 22 games/starts, he allowed 38 runs (35 earned) and 74 hits in 91.1 innings with 36 walks and 78 strikeouts. He also is pitching in the Arizona Fall League with the Surprise Saguaros.
