LAS VEGAS — Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made it clear here at the GM Meetings that he plans to add a hitter with power this offseason.

Could that mean the Red Sox simply just re-signing Alex Bregman or could it mean re-signing him and adding a power-hitting first baseman?

Is it an either/or situation? Breslow acknowledged the Red Sox could sign two big bats.

“We could,” Breslow said. “I think we’re going to be open to every conceivable path to improving the team. Specifically what that looks like or who the names are that fill those roles, I think we’ll see how the offseason plays out.”

Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonso and Eugenio Suárez are among the top power hitters available on the free agent market.

Breslow would not say whether he has re-engaged with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, this offseason. Bregman opted out of the final two years of his three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox. He’s now a free agent.

“So probably not surprisingly I’ll avoid getting into specific conversations, but this is a great opportunity to meet with a bunch of people, a bunch of representatives. Scott certainly being one of them,” Breslow said. “And we know Alex intimately based on what he did for us last year. So we’ll see how the offseason plays out but recognize the fit that he provides.”

The Red Sox finished 15th in home runs (186) in 2025. With Bregman, they hit just 49 home runs during August and September, the third fewest behind only the Cardinals (43) and Pirates (45).

Boston finished tied for the eighth fewest home runs (16) out of the first base position. The DH position produced just 11 home runs after Boston traded Rafael Devers on June 15.

In addition to a big bat, Breslow also mentioned the Red Sox will pursue a front of the rotation starter to complement ace Garrett Crochet.

Earlier Wednesday, Boras said the Red Sox are “in a position to be very aggressive in the free agent market” because they have locked up several young players to team-friendly long-term extensions.

“I think for a month now we’ve talked about the need to improve our roster and be open to exploring any paths to doing that. Free agency is absolutely one of them and for a long time has been a desired path here in Boston,” Breslow said when asked about Boras’ comment. “Trades are another. And continuing to develop our own talent is a third. … And we showed last year a willingness to be decisive and bold. And it’s really important that we take another step forward this year.”
