The 2025 Philadelphia Phillies finished short of their postseason goals for the third straight season. After winning 96 games, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski, and the Phillies Front Office have complex decisions to make about the roster this offseason.
One of the primary changes coming to Philadelphia for the 2026 Major League Baseball season is an Outfield makeover. Statistically, the Phillies had one of the worst Outfield units in MLB last season, with a combined -3.8 Wins Above Replacement (WAR). Four of the five teams with worse cumulative Outfielders WAR were non-playoff teams (Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Colorado Rockies).
The only guarantee for the 2026 MLB season is that the Phillies will finally call up one of the top ten Outfield Prospects in all of professional baseball. Justin Crawford had the second-most Hits among all players at Triple-A last season (147 Hits in 112 games), and his energy will be a valuable addition for the Phillies in 2026.
What Other Changes Could Be Coming To Philadelphia’s Outfield?
The addition of Crawford, who the Phillies consider an everyday player, means that the organization will not bring back veteran Outfielder Max Kepler.
The biggest name to be changing his address this offseason will be Nick Castellanos. The Athletic’s Matt Gelb has reported the Phillies continue to look for trading partners for the 33-year old Outfielder who has one year worth $20 Million left on his contract.
After four seasons in Philadelphia, Castellanos is no longer earning the weight of the contract he signed. Since being selected as an All-Star in 2023, the Right-Handed Hitting Outfielder has seen his Batting Average and Slugging percentage regress each season.
His lack of awareness of his regression, combined with his bad attitude towards how the Phillies cut back his playing time in favor of other players, has become an issue. With the Phillies are “open-minded” about Castellanos’ future, the reality is that smart baseball people understand the team will be better without him.
Dave Dombrowski has told the media that he prefers to find a right-handed bat to replace Castellanos in the Phillies heavy left-handed lineup. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Phillies Beat Writer Scott Lauber tells The Sports Bash with Mike Gill on 973 ESPN that the team wants to bring back 2024 NL MVP Finalist Kyle Schwarber, who is a Left-Handed Hitter.

The Phillies are projected to have five left-handed hitters in the lineup next season: Crawford, Bryce Harper, Schwarber, Bryson Stott, and Brandon Marsh. But there are scenarios where both Marsh and Stott are not on the team next season while rumors about players such as Cody Bellinger (outfielder), Adley Rutschman (Catcher), and Kyle Tucker (Outfielder) are all left-handed hitters.
According to MLB Insider Jon Morosi on MLB Network, one option the Phillies have to makeover their roster is trading Third Baseball Alec Bohm. The third-overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft has been apart of rumors and trade speculation over the last two years. The Phillies could replace him with a veteran like two-time World Series Champion Alex Bregman, or if they could convince two-time All-Star Shortstop Bo Bichette to change positions while signing in Free Agency.
Less exciting Outfielder makeover options includes signing a veteran like 34-year-old Rob Refsnyder to be the right-handed bat in a platoon with Brandon Marsh. The Phillies could also utilize Johan Rojas as a part-time Outfielder or use him in a minor trade to add new depth for the roster.
The other name to keep an eye on is Harrison Bader. The 2021 Gold Glove Award winner became a fan favorite among Philadelphia Sports Fans, but he is a free agent, and ther eis no guarantee that he will resign with the Phillies or that the organization would be willing to get into a bidding war for him.
