The New York Mets were one of the most disappointing teams in the league this season. After putting together an incredible offseason, they lost a lot of games down the stretch and missed the postseason on the final day of the regular season.
This winter, the Mets need to add some talent to avoid the same level of disappointment next season. But first, they need to secure their own top free agents. Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso are both free agents, and the Mets need to work on securing each of them to a new contract.
Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut recently predicted Alonso would ditch the Mets and sign a huge deal with the Texas Rangers in free agency.

“Pete Alonso will field interest from a variety of clubs, including the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners. However, we think he winds up heading to Texas,” Johnson wrote. “In 2025, Texas Rangers first basemen ranked 19th in OPS (.718), and run production became a bigger issue. If Texas can successfully move Adolis Garcia, there should be a path to a four-year deal with the 31-year-old first baseman that would include an opt-out after the 2027 season.”
Alonso should be the Mets’ top priority this winter, but they showed a lot of reluctance to pay him a lot of money. But after Alonso put together another impressive season, there should be teams in baseball who will give him the money and contract length he wants.
The Rangers could be one of them. They need to add a lot of talent to get back to the postseason. Alonso would fill one of the biggest holes on the roster in a huge way. Texas has the money and this idea makes plenty of sense.
