Ge Lamont’s last game as Pirate manager was at Three Rivers Stadium. Tonight, Lamont returns to the Pirate dugout as *** special adviser to new manager Don Kelly. At the age of 78, we asked him why he had the itch to get back into baseball. We also talked to Reds manager and Beaver County native Terry Francona about this changing of the guard here in Pittsburgh. Jim Lee and I had talked and Jim mentioned that maybe you know Donnie might and he called and I, you know, I was, I was receptive, but I couldn’t say yes right away, you know, I had to say, you know, think about it, uh, you know, and everybody mentions all the travel stuff, well. Travel’s not tough to me, you know, you get on *** *** charter flight and walk on *** bus and go to *** real nice hotel. So, you know, I guess I just decided, uh, do you want to stay home or do you wanna go out there and do something you really love. Don is ***, he’s *** good kid. I know he’s *** really good, I know he’s really well thought of as he should be. Um, I think he showed some, some good instincts in bringing Gene Lemon here. I don’t know if Gene can turn *** computer on, but I think he’s got *** degree in baseball, which can be really helpful.
