As the San Francisco Giants move forward with their offseason, the front office has a lot of pressure on it to build a contending team. It has been a few years since San Francisco was a real threat in the National League, and they’ve fallen behind others in the NL West division.
With how success the rival Los Angeles Dodgers have had, the Giants had to do something to somewhat even the playing field this winter. San Francisco had a decent year, but they fell short of getting back to the playoffs again.
Entering the winter, the president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, has been very vocal about his desire to add to the team. Posey has noted that pitching will be the priority of this group, and it could see the Giants be major players across the league.
San Francisco has a solid rotation as of now, but they can always add more talent to the mix. Ace Logan Webb still leads the team, but he can’t do it alone.
The Giants may look at the free agent market since there are plenty of options available for the team to choose from. But which players the team will target exactly remains to be seen at this point.
This is just a prediction, NOT a report!

Sonny Gray Traded to San Francisco Giants
If the Giants don’t want to go down the free agency route, or even spend big on the market, the team could always look to make a trade. One option for them could be to go after veteran right-hander Sonny Gray of the St. Louis Cardinals, who has been placed into trade rumors this winter.
Gray is likely to be traded this offseason as the Cardinals fully tear down the roster for a rebuild. The veteran is expected to have a strong trade market, and he could slot easily into any team.
This past season for the Cardinals, Gray posted an ERA of 4.28, but he did make 32 starts, showing some nice durability. Additionally, he struck out 2021 batters over 180.1 innings of work for St. Louis.
While the 2025 season wasn’t his greatest performance, Gray is only two years removed from finishing second in the 2023 American League Cy Young award race. Gray still has tremendous talent on the mound, and he could be a perfect fit for the Giants to go after.
Gray has two more years left on his contract, so the Giants wouldn’t be taking on super long-term money in the potential deal. The final year of the contract is a team option for $30 million, so it would put San Francisco into a fairly flexible position depending on how Gray performs this season.
The Giants have assets that the Cardinals may want back in a trade, and the two sides could be strong partners to get a deal done. St. Louis would get a nice haul here, and it would be a win-win all around.
