The Cincinnati Reds designated for assignment right-hander Carson Spiers and added three minor-leaguers, including prized shortstop Edwin Arroyo, to the 40-man roster at the Nov. 18 deadline for setting the 40-man lists and protecting otherwise eligible players from exposure to next month’s Rule 5 draft.

Spiers, who opened the 2025 season in the Reds rotation in place of late-starting Andrew Abbott, was shut down in late April because of a shoulder impingement and then during his rehab process developed an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. He finished the season on the 60-day injured list.

Spiers, 25, gave up five runs in 9 1/3 innings across two starts (4.82 ERA) and five more in a long-relief outing before going on the injured list (6.08 ERA overall). He’s 5-10 with a 5.69 ERA in 29 career games across three seasons, including 14 starts.

In addition to Arroyo, who could be on the brink of a big-league debut in 2026 after missing all of 2024 with a shoulder injury, the Reds also selected Double-A infielder Leo Balcazar and Triple-A outfielder Hector Rodriguez to fill the remaining spots on the 40-man roster.
