The Yankees grabbed another win on Tuesday, as Will Warren turned in an excellent 5.2-inning start, and Aaron Judge continued his torrid pace against the Rangers. Elsewhere around the American League, there were close games aplenty, without much scoring to go around — here’s a look at how it all went down.
Detroit Tigers (32-17) 5, St. Louis Cardinals (27-22) 4
It was a back and forth affair for the Cats and Cards on Tuesday, a stark change from St. Louis’ 11-run performance the day prior. The Tigers offense got right to work in the top of the first, when Kerry Carpenter led off the ballgame with a solo homer off Erik Fedde, and Riley Greene pitched in with an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
On the mound, Tarik Skubal maintained that 2-0 Detroit lead for a stretch, keeping things scoreless on the St. Louis side through four innings. The Tigers doubled their lead to four in their half of the third inning, when Greene continued his big day with a two-run blast into right.
Between the fifth and seventh, however, St. Louis mounted their comeback and eventually tied things up. A Nolan Arenado two-run shot, an RBI knock from Iván Herrera and a Masyn Wynn sac fly did the trick, and had this one tied up in its later stages.
Riley Greene and the Tigers ultimately had the last laugh however, when he doubled to give them the lead they’d hold on to, capping off his huge night at the plate.
Tampa Bay Rays (22-26) 3, Houston Astros (25-23) 2
Brandon Walter and the Astros had things under control for much of the night on Tuesday, though the final result would beg otherwise. It took a late rally from Tampa Bay, one that was ultimately successful, for them to grab a much needed win as they try to climb from mediocrity.
Houston scored a run in the second on a Jake Meyers double and another in the third on Isaac Paredes’ eighth home run of the season. Meanwhile Walter, making his first big league start and his first appearance since 2023, was dealing against the Rays. The lefty finished going five shutout innings, striking out just as many and walking just one.
The score remained locked at 2-0 for much of the ballgame, until the Rays made their push in the eighth inning. A hit-by-pitch and a single, as well as a double-steal, put them in prime position, before a a timely single from Jonathan Aranda through the right side wiped the slate clean.
An inning later, the Rays would finish the job. After Christopher Morel walked and a Brandon Lowe pinch-hit double put him 90 feet from a Rays win, light-hitting Taylor Walls cashed in on his chance to be the hero when he lofted a sacrifice fly into left field.
Other Games
Boston Red Sox (25-25) 2, New York Mets (29-20) 0: The Red Sox climbed back to the .500 mark with a shutout win on Tuesday. Their scoring came thanks to solo homers from Carlos Narváez and Rafael Devers, while a cast of seven Red Sox pitchers kept the Mets scoreless from start to finish. They needed so many because of a disagreement that led to Walker Buehler and Alex Cora hitting the clubhouse a little earlier than expected.
Chicago White Sox (15-34) 1, Seattle Mariners (27-20) 0: The Mariners dropped what could be categorized as a bummer of a game against the White Sox. The M’s went scoreless against one of baseball’s worst teams, unable to match the lone Sox run, which came from a Joshua Palacios single in the third inning.
