Tokay High senior Brock Sell had 44 hits in 91 at-bats this spring as the Tokay baseball team went 16-13 overall, and won the San Joaquin Athletic Association title at 13-1.

For his efforts, Sell was named MVP when the league released its All-SJAA team last week.

Sell finished the season with a .484 batting average, two home runs, five triples, 11 doubles, 17 RBIs and 44 runs, and also had a 3.87 earned-run average in 12 2/3 innings of work on the mound.

Also receiving top awards for Tokay were seniors Paul Buckley, who was named Outstanding Pitcher of the Year, and Zack Sanchez, who was named Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.

Buckley led the Tigers with 43 2/3 innings pitched in 10 appearances, with a 2.73 ERA. He allowed 17 earned runs (25 total) on 41 hits while striking out 43 batters.

Sanchez held down the backstop as Tokay’s catcher, with eight errors in 205 chances this season.

Others earning honors were Co-Outstanding Hitters of the Year Larry Cachua of Franklin and Jaxson Bayani of Bear Creek. Bear Creek finished second in the league standings at 12-2, and Franklin was third at 10-4.

Tokay had three players make all-league team in infielders Ryan Olivery, Noah Van Dyke and Connor Preap. Oliveri batted .295 this season, with four doubles, 17 RBIs and 21 runs, Van Dyke batter .435 with a homer, a triple, two doubles, 22 RBIs and 16 runs, and Preap batted .216 with a triple, three doubles, 10 RBIs and 10 runs. Preap also had a 2.90 ERA in 31 1.3 innings pitched, and Oliveri had a 2.80 ERA in 15 innings.

The rest of the all-league team were third baseman Kevin Johnson, catcher Logan Peterson and outfielder Jacob Ordez from Bear Creek, catcher JoseLuis Suarez and first baseman Jordan Paris from Weston Ranch, infielder Jay Corona, catcher Devan McMinn and third baseman Topher Speers from Franklin, shortstop Sebastian ramirez and third baseman Jackson Brooks from Stagg, shortstop/pitcher combo Santiago Moreno and and Alberto Cervantes from Edison, catcher/first baseman David Fierros from Chavez and infielder/pitcher Mateo Palacios from McNair.

Honorable mention went to Tokay second baseman Gavin Severson, Weston Ranch third baseman/pitcher Nico Orona, Bear Creek second baseman Ryan McLaughlin, Edison second baseman/pitcher Izaak Navarrete, Franklin outfielder Dallas Campoy, Chavez shortstop/pitcher Joseph Baltazar, Stagg catcher Patrick Inthasak and McNair infielder/pitcher Manny Moreira.
