ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – In the latest of a flurry of moves the Atlanta Braves made on Wednesday, the team acquired infielder Mauricio Dubón from the Houston Astros.
Shortstop Nick Allen will head to Houston in return.
Dubón, 31, slashed .241/.289/.355 in 133 games with the Astros in 2025 and earned his second Gold Glove award in two seasons, both times as a utility player. In parts of four seasons with Houston, Dubón recorded a .659 OPS and helped bring a World Series trophy to Houston in 2022.
Dubón has appeared defensively at seven different positions, including 107 games at shortstop and 214 at second base. He’s made at least one appearance at every defensive position besides pitcher and catcher.
Allen, 27, was acquired by the Braves last offseason and hit .221 with a .532 OPS in 135 games for the team in 2025.
He was named a Gold Glove finalist at shortstop for his defensive wizardry, but his lack of offensive skills prompted the team to bring in Ha-Seong Kim, who took over as primary shortstop in the final month of the season.
Flurry of moves
In addition to the Dubón addition, the Braves resigned closer Raisel Iglesias and acquired left-hander Ryan Rolison from the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, topping off the team’s busiest day of the offseason thus far.
General manager Alex Anthopoulos said Wednesday night that Dubón brings versatility to the table, and that he’d be fine with Dubón opening the season as the team’s starting shortstop.
“We like the contact and the speed as well,” Anthopoulos said. “So, just a good piece. You know, you’re gonna need that over the course of the year. We’ve had a bunch of injuries the last few years and the fact that he does it and he’s a phenomenal teammate, just a great fit for us.”
Pitching is still a priority for Atlanta, but the team will continue to explore the shortstop market for an everyday option, in addition to Dubón, as well. Dubón’s role will be determined by how the remainder of the offseason goes.
“Knowing he has the flexibility and the athleticism and the ability to do all that stuff,” Anthopoulos said, “it just gives us so many options this winter.”
As for Iglesias, the team was happy to hold onto him at the deadline for the possibility of him rebounding and returning in free agency.
Rolison adds depth to the mix.
