The Philadelphia Phillies have some key players on the open market, but perhaps none more important than Kyle Schwarber. He was the National League MVP Award runner-up last season.

While many teams could pursue Schwarber, an ascending National League team could have an edge in signing him. Schwarber grew up outside of Cincinnati and rooted for the Cincinnati Reds. Earlier this year, he spoke on how he would love to play for the Reds, and now that he is a free agent, questions about playing for his hometown team are coming up again.

“I grew up going to games there, and I grew up sitting in the bleachers and watching a lot of games,” Schwarber told WLWT-TV in Cincinnati in a clip posted on X. “I think the kid would be excited that you have your hometown team that’s calling. Also, being in the profession, knowing a little bit more about the ins and outs, you always have to listen and keep different options open, and just see what happens.”

The Phillies still seem like the favorite to sign Schwarber, but playing for his childhood team may be something that sways his decision. The Reds made the postseason this year, and adding Schwarber could make them legitimate contenders.

Schwarber is keeping his options open, but it is clear the Reds hold special meaning to him, being from the area. However, he is set up for a massive payday, and the Phillies may be better equipped to pay him.
