Randy Jones, San Diego Padres legend passed away at the age of 75, the club announced on Wednesday (November 19, 2025). He was the first pitcher from the organization to win the Cy Young Award.
Mourning the left-handed pitcher’s death, the Padres said in a post on X, With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, the Padres mourn the passing of our beloved left-hander, Randy Jones. Randy was a cornerstone of our franchise. The CY Young Award winner, Padres Hall of Famer, and tremendous community ambassador, was a giant in our lives and will be greatly missed.” The cause of death has not been revealed yet.
Born on January 12, 1950, in Fullerton, California, Randall Leo Jones began his Major League career with San Diego in 1973 and ended up recording 735 career strikeouts. According to TMZ, he went on to earn two All-Star nods, the 1976 N.L. Cy Young Award among other accolades. He was honored by the franchise after he retired.
After the conclusion of his playing career, he kept his loyalty for the San Diego Padres alive as he returned to San Diego and worked as an ambassador for the club. He often made appearances on the team’s pregame and postgame broadcasts, according to USA Today. He also had his own BBQ stand, first at Qualcomm Stadium and then at Petco Park.

In 1997, the San Diego Padres retired his No. 35 jersey. Two years later, he was inducted into the inaugural class of the Padres Hall of Fame. The left hander also pitched for the New York Mets in 1981 and then went on to coach, working with young players, including Barry Zito.
