When the D-Backs signed James McCann in late June this season, it wasn’t a flashy headline; it was a savvy, under-the-radar move to plug a gap and lean on experience. McCann now will get another chance with Arizona as he signs a one-year deal worth $2.75 million with an opportunity to earn another $500,000 through incentives. While his bat isn’t what it once was, his steadiness, pitch-calling acumen, and resume make him a valuable chess piece for Arizona.

In 42 games for Arizona, McCann hit .260/.324/.431 with five home runs over 42 games. His on-field value isn’t eye-popping, but manager Torey Lovullo stressed what McCann brings behind the plate with his baseball IQ, game management, and the ability to help younger pitchers navigate high-leverage moments.

McCann joins the club at a critical moment as Arizona strives to get back to the postseason after its 2023 World Series run. Gabriel Moreno, the starting catcher for the D-backs, will now have some great help and leadership behind him.
