The Philadelphia Phillies have one of the better rosters in baseball, but they’ve continued to fall short in the postseason. They fell flat on their face this October, and it’s clear the front office needs to make some big upgrades this winter.

But before they can upgrade their team, they need to re-sign or replace their free agents, including JT Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber.

ClutchPoints’ Bailey Bassett recently predicted the Phillies would be able to re-sign Realmuto on a one-year, $16 million deal this offseason.

Philadelphia Phillies catcher JT Realmuto

“J.T. Realmuto is still one of the best catchers in baseball,” Bassett wrote. “The Phillies’ core hasn’t been able to get over the hump, but they are still a ways away from blowing the thing up. Philadelphia should re-sign Realmuto to a short-term deal.”

It’s hard to find a catcher who’s as talented and well-rounded as Realmuto. The star has begun to fall off over the last few years, but he’s still an elite catcher in the big leagues.

Signing him to a one-year deal would be the perfect low-risk move for the Phillies to make. If he plays well, they could chase another one-year deal with him next offseason. If he struggles, they could let him go in free agency. The move would help the Phillies win next year, but it wouldn’t tie them into a big contract.
