Reports have started to indicate that the Texas Rangers might have to cut ties with a few highly-paid players on their roster, and the New York Post’s Matt Ehalt believes there’s a scenario where the New York Yankees could be in a good spot to land some of those players due to that.

The one player he took a look at was Corey Seager, the star shortstop who would be a perfect fit in New York.

“Rangers ownership plans to cut payroll for 2026, according to the Dallas Morning News, and the severity of such measures could lead the team to possibly trading high-priced stars such as shortstop Corey Seager or ace Jacob deGrom.

“Should Seager be made available, some have linked the Yankees since they showed previous interest and Anthony Volpe’s lack of development in three seasons… Seager cannot block a trade to the Yankees since they are not on his no-trade list, per the outlet,” he wrote.

As we look at what Seager has done throughout his career, it’s fair to mention that he hasn’t played in a ton of games due to some of the injuries he’s dealt with, but he also posted a ridiculous 6.2 bWAR in just 102 games.

If Seager can play 120-plus games throughout the regular season and be ready to go in the playoffs, I don’t see a scenario where this wouldn’t be the right deal to make.

Seager just blasted 21 home runs and posted a 151 OPS+. He also helped the Rangers win a World Series just a few years ago, so it’s safe to say that he’d be a massive upgrade to Anthony Volpe.

The question now becomes centered around whether New York would actually have a chance to land him, which Ehalt added quotes from what Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young had to say.

“My main thought is that we’re going to have a payroll that’s high enough for us to win,” Young said during the GM meetings. “We’ve got a great core group in place. We are in a great position. We don’t have to make any moves to accommodate payroll or to buy payroll flexibility, so to speak.”

When stuff like this starts to come out about teams wanting to cut payroll, it often becomes true.

If it’s indeed the case, the Yankees need to do whatever they can to land a player of Seager’s caliber.

It’s really that simple.
