The Milwaukee Brewers’ approach to team building in this era of baseball is rather unique.
On one side of the coin, they’re among the MLB’s premier ball clubs when it comes to identifying and developing talent. Thanks to the infrastructure that’s in Milwaukee, the Brewers are regularly a part of the playoff conversation.
On the flip side is the fact that they’re hesitant to spend big bucks on their roster. The Brewers’ payroll is oftentimes in the bottom third and almost always in the bottom half of the league rankings on a year-to-year basis, which makes it difficult for them to make a true World Series push.
We’ve seen both of these factors come into play and create a sticky situation surrounding the Brewers’ ace, Freddy Peralta.
Milwaukee acquired Peralta from the Seattle Mariners back in 2015 when he was just a teenager. He developed over the years and has since blossomed into an All-Star-caliber starting arm. But with Peralta set to hit free agency next year and a massive payday in store, there have been rumblings of the Brewers trading him this offseason.

Freddy Peralta Sent to Atlanta Braves in MLB Trade Pitch
It’s weird to think that a team would trade a pitcher who just finished 5th in Cy Young voting, especially when they’re owed just $8 million next season. But with the Brewers’ financial restrictions, this could be the best move for them in the long haul.
Is Peralta’s presence the difference between them getting beyond the NL’s big spenders in the postseason? Probably not.
Fans can debate whether trading Peralta is a good idea all day long, but it seems that a trade is very much on the table.
With that in mind, Marissa Myers of TWSN has predicted that the Atlanta Braves will be the ones to land him this offseason.
“Freddy Peralta is now a two-time All-Star pitcher, and having that type of talent on the Braves’ pitching staff would help them in their quest to get back to the World Series sooner than expected,” wrote Myers.
Should The Braves Trade For Freddy Peralta?
We’ve discussed the Brewers’ motives for trading Peralta, but should the Braves pull the trigger, as Myers suggests they will?
The Braves have not been shy about their desire to generally be aggressive this offseason, while also expressing interest in adding to their rotation.
That makes sense. The starting staff in Atlanta has dealt with numerous significant injuries in recent years, and finding an insurance policy in case Chris Sale finally takes a step back would be wise.
So, should they target Peralta? In my opinion, yes, they should. The need for pitching is clear, and Peralta is a top-of-the-line starting arm who would give Atlanta the pitching to complement their lineup, which is powered by Ronald Acuna Jr.
There’s always the risk of Peralta turning into a one-year rental, but the Braves seem intent on going all in this season, and making a move like this is in line with that mentality.
This trade would help take their rotation to the next level, helping prove that last year was a fluke and the Braves are still World Series contenders.
