The San Francisco Giants enter the 2025-2026 MLB offseason with a clear goal of improving the roster for a playoff run in 2026.
While they might not be in on the top free agents like Kyle Tucker, Kyle Schwarber, and Bo Bichette, they are likely to have interest in the top pitchers, both in the rotation and the bullpen.
As Robert Murray of Fansided.com reports, the Giants and Buster Posey have begun making their moves this winter. On Thanksgiving, the Giants reportedly agreed to a $1.4 million deal with former Cleveland Guardians reliever Sam Hentges.
Giants sign former Guardians reliever Sam Hentges
“Free-agent reliever Sam Hentges and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a one-year, $1.4 million contract, according to a source familiar with the deal,” Murray reports.
The Giants need bullpen upgrades after trading away Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers to the New York Yankees and New York Mets, respectively, at the trade deadline.
San Francisco is adding Hentges, a four-year MLB veteran who’s spent his entire career with the Guardians. He’s 29 years old and didn’t pitch during the 2025 season.
But back in 2024, Hentges had a 3.04 ERA in 25 games, striking out 27 batters across 23.2 innings pitched with a 134 ERA+.

His best season came in 2022, when he finished with an impressive 2.32 ERA in 57 games for Cleveland. His 1.3 bWAR was the best of his career, and across 62 innings pitched, Hentges struck out 72 batters, walked 19, and allowed just three home runs.
Hentges was recovering from an injury for most of the 2025 season and was non-tendered by Cleveland heading into the offseason.
It didn’t take long for the reliever to find a new home, as Posey and the Giants are signing the former Guardians reliever to a one-year deal worth $1.4 million.
