MLB Free Agency is starting to pick up for the 2026 offseason as Dylan Cease has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays, and Josh Naylor re-signed with the Seattle Mariners. With moves starting to be made, it is only a matter of time before the rest of the big names start signing with teams.
For the pitcher market, one of the big names that remains is Ranger Suarez, but that can be expected to change relatively quickly. There are multiple teams that will be interested in signing Ranger Suarez, as he has provided consistent, solid production throughout his career, and that type of proaction will be essential after many teams saw issues with their pitching down the stretch of last season.
The team that makes sense to sign Ranger Suarez is the Chicago Cubs.

Ranger Suarez Signs With the Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs made impressive strides throughout the 2025 MLB season as they made the MLB Playoffs, but were eliminated in the MLB Divisional Round Series when facing the Milwaukee Brewers. One of the biggest things they lacked as the season progressed was true pitching depth that could be utilized for an extended season.
They were able to sign Shota Imanaga back on a qualifying offer, but they need more than just him, Matthew Boyd, and Justin Steele to rely on in their rotation. To advance their pitching staff, they can look to sign Ranger Suarez.
While Ranger Suarez isn’t elite, he is still one of the top pitchers in the entire league. With Suarez being just 30 years old, and coming off a 2025 season in which he had a 12-8 record with a 3.20 ERA and 151 strikeouts across 157.1 innings pitched, he has proven to still be performing at that consistent level that has led to him having a career ERA of 3.25.
Between his regular season pitching, as well as playoff success that has led to a 1.48 ERA, it has led to Spotrac projecting his contract to be around six years, $162 million ($27 million AAV). For a team like the Cubs in the midst of contending, they need to do what they can to capitalize on this, and signing Ranger Suarez is how they advance their pitching forward for the future.
