As the St. Louis Cardinals continue their offseason, the team still has a few veteran players that they would like to move in potential trades. St. Louis has already traded away ace pitcher Sonny Gray, and the front office has now turned its attention to veteran infielder Nolan Arenado.

Arenado has been part of trade rumors for years now, but due to his no-trade clause, things have been complicated. The Cardinals almost moved the former All-Star last winter, but Arenado vetoed the deal to the Houston Astros.

But now it does seem like he will be moved, with Arenado understanding that the Cardinals aren’t trying to contend. However, his struggles this past season and contract could be a point of contention.

For the season, Arenado hit .237 with 12 home runs and 52 runs batted in, appearing in 107 games for the Cardinals. There is hope that he can turn things back around, and any team that trades for him will be banking on it.

Luckily, his contract only has two more years left on it, offering teams a chance to add him without the long-term salary commitment. Arenado is scheduled to make $16 million for the upcoming season, and then $15 million for the 2017 season.

The Cardinals want to part ways with Arenado this offseason, but whether they can find a suitable trade partner remains to be seen. However, it does feel very different this winter compared to others, especially considering that St. Louis is now entering a somewhat rebuild that the veteran infielder doesn’t want to be a part of.

Milwaukee Brewers Take Swing on Nolan Arenado

One team that could look to make a deal for Arenado is the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee is coming off a season that saw it clinch the best record in the league, but the team fell short in the postseason once again.

But adding a veteran like Arenado could help boost this club, both offensively and defensively. Doing a trade between the division rivals could be tricky, but if the Brewers were to present a decent enough deal, something could be done.

Arenado desperately needs a change of scenery, and going to a title contender like Milwaukee could be good for his career. The Brewers would get a big upgrade for the lineup, even with Arenado not being the star hitter that he was a few years ago.

Milwaukee could use his bat in the lineup, and he could be a completely motivated version of himself with them. Since he would have a real shot to go after a title, Arenado could become a problem again for opposing teams.

The Brewers may need to take a swing at a player like this, and it could work out well for them in the end. This club wants to maximize the winning window with the current group in place, and adding a former All-Star to the mix could bolster their chances.
