No, it’s not on the magnitude of the Dylan Cease signing on Wednesday, but the Jays signed minor leaguer Tanner Andrews to shore up some pitching depth in the minor leagues.
Per the Blue Jays transaction logs, they’ve signed reliever Tanner Andrews to a minor league deal.
Andrews, a RHP, was drafted in the 10th round by the Miami Marlins and recently turned 30.
He pitched with Minnesota’s AA team last season, as well as Independent ball.
Andrews is a 30-year-old right-handed pitcher. He was drafted in the 10th round of the 2018 draft by the Miami Marlins out of Purdue. He spent four seasons in the Marlins’ minor league system before being traded to the San Francisco Giants following the 2021 season.
He spent parts of three seasons with the Giants, reaching as high as Triple-A in 2024. At the conclusion of the 2024 season, he pitched in Puerto Rico during their Winter League season, before agreeing to terms with the Atlantic League’s Staten Island FerryHawks to begin the 2025 season.
There, he pitched alongside former Blue Jay Kirby Snead and didn’t give up an earned run in 13.2 innings pitched, striking out over half the batters he faced (52.1 K%) while walking just two batters.
The Minnesota Twins took note and signed him to a minor league deal in early June. In 16.2 innings pitched with the Twins’ Double-A team, Andrews had a 3.78 ERA and 2.01 FIP, with a 24 K% and 4 BB%.
According to his 2024 Prospect Savant profile, Andrews’ velocity sat at 94.3 mph with the fastball. He also threw a splitter 33.8% of the time, as well as a slider. As you can tell by his strikeout rate, Andrews gets a ton of swing and misses. Encouragingly, Andrews has seemed to make some adjustments to lower his walk rate since the start of the 2025 season. This is the third minor league signing this off-season. First, they signed utility infielder Carlos Mendoza, who had a strong 2025 season, but has yet to appear in a big league game. They then signed Rodolfo Castro, who has some big league experience but hasn’t played in a Major League Baseball game since 2023.
