Veteran closer Edwin Diaz is hitting the free agent market after another stellar season with the New York Mets. Diaz has opted out of his current contract with New York and has been looking for a similar deal to the one he signed years ago.

Diaz signed a five-year, $102 million contract that he signed with New York a few seasons ago, and he could look to land another one like this. Even with him being a few years older, Diaz remains an extremely effective closer in the sport and is arguably the best in the business.

Last season for the Mets, Diaz put up an incredible ERA of 1.62 over 62 appearances. The veteran also had 28 saves for the season, and he struck out 98 batters over 66.1 innings of work.

Overall, Diaz could be worth the price that it will cost to land him, but where he may land remains to be seen. The Mets and Diaz would love to reunite, but as the winter goes on, it seems less likely.

New York may not want to pay Diaz what it will take to land him back, and this could open the door for other teams to sign him. Diaz could fit in with any team, and the Mets would be wise to retain his services.

However, if Diaz were to be given a better offer elsewhere, he would likely take the opportunity to land the largest contract that he can. The veteran right-hander is easily the best relief pitcher available, and he could drastically shift power in the league, depending on where he would sign.

Detroit Tigers Steal Edwin Diaz From Mets

One team that is primed to potentially steal Diaz away from the Mets is the Detroit Tigers. Detroit is coming off a season that saw them come within one game of the American League Championship Series, and they have been rumored to be aggressive this winter.

The Tigers don’t need to do a lot across the roster, but tweaking some areas could help push them over the hump. Adding to the bullpen is one of those concerns for the team, and Diaz could drastically shore up the late-game situations for this organization.

If the Tigers were to bring Diaz into the mix, not only would they have a shutdown closer, but he would get to pitch in meaningful games. Diaz did reach the playoffs with the Mets a few times, but overall, his time in New York could have gone better, team-wise.

The Tigers have been seen by many across baseball as a team that could be a real player in free agency this winter. Signing Diaz could be one of the biggest moves by any team in the league, and it could push Detroit to be a scary team in the AL again.

Detroit has the tools to win the World Series, but they may just need a little more on the roster. Diaz could be the missing piece, and he would likely be worth the price that it would take to sign him.
