A North Texas high school athlete known for excelling in the classroom and on the field is making history in a brand-new league.

Abigail Moore, a senior at Arlington High School, was selected in the 6th round of the draft for the inaugural Women’s Pro Baseball League, which will begin play in August 2026.

“Yes, I got drafted to the New York team,” Moore said, smiling. “So this provides a whole new door that I didn’t even know was there, and it’s exciting to know that I have more opportunity to play the sport that I love.”

Moore has played on Arlington High’s baseball, basketball and softball teams, but her passion for baseball began in t-ball.

“There was no question I was a lot better than a lot of the boys I was playing against,” Moore said.

The WPBL’s seven-week season is the first professional opportunity of its kind in decades.

“There were women that played 70 years ago, but since then, we are the ones creating opportunity, and so it’s exciting,” Moore said. “When I think about it, it brings me such joy because there are so many of us and we’re doing it all at the same time.”

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Moore is also ranked second in her class at Arlington High.

“I mean, she’s a trailblazer and has the skills and the drive and the want to back it up,” said Arlington High School Head Baseball Coach Brian Womack. “You can’t do this on the varsity field in basketball or in softball or baseball without the want to and the drive to be the best, and she has that.”

Girls basketball coach Will Floyd added, “Just so excited about this opportunity for her because there’s no one more deserving of it. Women’s sports are growing everywhere, just like the WNBA is blowing up, and every sport is just following the same footsteps, and baseball will blow up, too.”

Reflecting on her journey, Moore said, “Seeing myself slowly achieve those dreams taught me that I should never doubt myself. Anything that I can put my mind to, if I really work hard enough, I can achieve.”
