Former Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander has been placed on the 15-day injured list by the San Francisco Giants.

Verlander, 42, has soreness in his pectoral muscle, Giants manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday after the Giants’ loss to the Kansas City Royals.

“They’re saying, ‘Give yourself a blow. Take the 15 days and let’s get this behind you and be ready to go,'” Verlander told the Bay Area News Group.

The Giants visit Detroit for a three-game series Monday-Wednesday. The way the Giants’ rotation was setting up, Verlander was scheduled to start Saturday against the Washington Nationals and would not have pitched in the Detroit series.

Verlander has made 10 starts for the Giants this season. He is 0-3 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.40 WHIP covering 52 innings. He also has 41 strikeouts and 21 walks.
