The Toronto Blue Jays and their ongoing search for bullpen help this offseason just got a little tougher after two key relievers were taken off the free agent market. Ryan Helsley found a new home with the Baltimore Orioles while Devin Williams was secured by the New York Mets.
However, the Blue Jays hope in landing an elite bullpen arm could significantly take a bigger hit if the latest prediction by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com ends up coming to fruition. Feinsand has top free agent closer Edwin Diaz signing with the reigning World Series champions Los Angeles Dodgers this winter.
Blue Jays fans should roll their eyes at this Dodgers prediction
Recall that this is the same Dodgers team that ended up defeating Toronto in the World Series. The Blue Jays, continue to chase their first title in over 32 years as the Dodgers repeated as champions. Already an offensive and pitching juggernaut in recent years with a roster full of stars, adding Diaz would further cement Los Angeles as the top contender to beat once again in 2026.
With the bullpen issues that the Dodgers encountered late in the regular season and ultimately persisted into the postseason last year, the 31-year-old closer would help stabilize the back end of their relief corps. After all, Diaz is coming off a spectacular 2025 campaign with the Mets.
Diaz posted a 6-3 record, 28 saves, with a 1.63 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, allowing only 12 earned runs and four home runs all season in 66.1 total innings over 62 relief appearances. More importantly, with a career strikeout rate of close to 40%, including reaching as high as 50% just three years ago, the right-handed flamethrower can blow away hitters at will, while easily handling the toughest situations.
In doing so, the rich would end up getting much richer, making the Blue Jays’ quest to dethrone the Dodgers that much more difficult in the coming years. It would also leave Toronto with just secondary tier options such as Pete Fairbanks, Robert Suarez and Emilio Pagan to target going forward to improve their bullpen this offseason.
As a result, the Blue Jays should do all they can to make a run at Diaz to not only bolster their chances of winning, but also to keep Los Angeles from running away with everything.
