The Baltimore Orioles have been one of MLB’s most active teams during the 2025 offseason. Ahead of the Winter Meetings, the Orioles traded for outfielder Taylor Ward and signed closer Ryan Helsley to a two-year contract. However, Baltimore is not close to done, and it has been connected to a former Cy Young candidate.

According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, the Orioles are a possibility for starting pitcher Zac Gallen if he doesn’t return to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gallen, who helped lead Arizona to the World Series in 2023, struggled in 2025 with a 4.83 ERA, but his previous form with the Diamandbacks was elite.

The 30-year-old pitcher was a Cy Young Award finalist in 2023, posting a 3.47 ERA with 17 wins. In 2022, Gallen had a 2.54 ERA with a 5.3 WAR. Overall, Gallen has been a great pitcher for Arizona over the past few years, but the 2025 season was tough for him.

Baltimore needs another starting pitcher, maybe even more than one, to solidify its rotation. Gallen would represent an excellent option for the Orioles, even if he didn’t perform up to expectations in 2025. The Orioles need pitching, and Gallen likely requires a change of scenery to find his previous form.
