The Los Angeles Dodgers have established themselves as one of the most aggressive teams in baseball. They have spent big in the last two offseasons and have won back-to-back World Series.

The Dodgers have shown no reason to believe they will not be aggressive this offseason. Many insiders expect them to enter the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes and fill the few holes on their team with star players. Their starting rotation is stacked already, but could they be in play for Tarik Skubal?

With the winter meeting starting, Skubal will be a hot name in rumors. He and the Detroit Tigers are reportedly far apart in contract negotiations as he enters his final season before free agency. Skubal could look to become the highest-paid pitcher in baseball after two Cy Young Award-winning seasons. It would require a contract that would be the biggest in franchise history for the Tigers.

Although a trade of Skubal may be unlikely, the Tigers may be wise to deal their ace if they know they have no chance of keeping him past next season. FanSided’s Christopher Kline proposed this trade that would send Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers:

Dodgers receive: LHP Tarik SkubalTigers receive: RHP Emmet Sheehan, OF Zhyir Hope (Dodgers No. 2 prospect), 3B Alex Freeland (Dodgers No.4 prospect) and RHP River Ryan

This package may be an underpay for SKubal, but the reality is that right now, he is nothing more than a rental. The Dodgers have the ability to pay him, something the Tigers have not proven to have. Skubal is arguably the best pitcher in baseball, and the Dodgers would add him to a rotation that already has Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell and Rōki Sasaki.

The Dodgers have been said to be “ruining baseball” with their spending habits. However, if fans were upset before, they would be outraged if the Dodgers added SKubal as they go for a three-peat. Sheehan is a solid pitcher and had a 2.82 ERA last year. Hope and Freeland are two of the Dodgers’ best prospects, and Freeland could start right away. Meanwhile, Ryan was once one of the Dodgers’ best prospects, but he is not going to take a rotation spot from one of the Dodgers’ All-Star pitchers.

In reality, it will take a phenomenal package to land Skubal. He has noted he wants to stay in Detroit, but the team will have to spend at an unprecedented level to keep him around.
