The New York Yankees have reportedly checked in on an intriguing free agent in the early offseason.

The Yankees boasted arguably the best offense in baseball this season, leading the league in runs scored and home runs. New York will likely primarily focus on strengthening its bullpen and starting rotation this offseason, but that does not mean the team won’t pursue players who would improve its roster.

One player that the Yankees have surprisingly shown interest in is Seattle Mariners 32-year-old slugger Jorge Polanco, as reported by The Seattle Times’ Adam Jude.

“The Mariners have made their interest in Polanco well known, and a return to Seattle is believed to be Polanco’s preference, too,” Jude wrote Wednesday. “The two sides, though, do not appear to be close to a deal. The market could come into focus for Polanco next week when industry executives and agents come together for the league’s annual meetings.

“Polanco is seeking a multi-year contract, according to industry sources, and he’s expected to have healthy interest. The Boston Red Sox have been linked to Polanco, and the New York Yankees have previously checked in on him.”

Polanco is a former All-Star, and though he’s a switch-hitting slugger who mashed 26 home runs last season, he may not fit with the Yankees. The 32-year-old served primarily as a designated hitter for the Mariners this season, while also spending time playing second base. Though he played more at shortstop earlier in his career, Polanco has not consistently played there since 2021 and has spent little time at third base.

After falling short in the playoffs, the Yankees need to make improvements this offseason. Polanco may not be the best fit, however, as the team is not in need of a designated hitter or infielder.
