The Chicago Cubs are in a position where they need to improve their roster this offseason. There are a lot of intriguing options that could be on the team’s radar, but one player chose to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays over them for a simple reason: money. Let’s take a closer look at the reports as to why Chicago Cubs fans should be a bit upset with the front office after seeing what has happened.

Chicago Cubs were outbid for Dylan Cease

The Chicago Cubs are in a position where they need to improve their pitching staff. However, money seems to be a bit of a cause for concern. In a report from Sahadev Sharma from The Athletic, the Chicago Cubs were interested in adding Dylan Cease, but the money got too high for their liking.

“According to a league source, the Cubs were in on Dylan Cease but bowed out as the bidding reached the $200 million mark. Cease eventually signed a seven-year, $210 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. A chunk of the deal was deferred, a practice the Cubs have avoided in recent years.”

The Cubs are acting a bit more rationally compared to other teams, like the Blue Jays here. However, there is an old saying from Andrew Friedman about this:

“If you’re always rational about every free agent, you will finish third on every free agent.”

This could also be viewed in a positive light depending on how you look at things. Yes, the Cubs fell short on Cease, but this means they have money to spend on free agency. Framber Valdez, Michael King, Lucas Giolito, and Zac Gallen are just some of the starting pitchers still without a contract, so general manager Jed Hoyer can be in on some pitching. There also is the trade market to look at for pitching help as well. Maybe it is not Cease, but the fact the front office is willing to get close to $200 million contracts means the team is open to get a key player.

Who will the Cubs wind up getting to add to their starting rotation this winter?
