Veteran manager Ron Washington is finalizing a deal to join the San Francisco Giants as their infield coach, USA Today reported Thursday.

Washington, 73, was the skipper for the Los Angeles Angels last season before stepping away on June 20 because of health issues. Interim manager Ray Montgomery finished out the year, but neither was retained at the end of the season.

More on new San Francisco Giants coach Ron Washington

Including a 36-38 mark last season, Washington’s career record is 763-748 (.505) with the Texas Rangers (2007-14) and the Angels. He guided Texas to the first two pennants in franchise history in 2010 and 2011.

Washington, an infielder, played parts of 10 seasons in the majors with four teams (1977, 1981-89).

He previously served as an infield coach with the then-Oakland Athletics (1996-2006, 2015-16) and the Atlanta Braves (2017-23).

The San Francisco Giants hired former Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello to be their new manager on Oct. 22, replacing Bob Melvin following an 81-81 season in 2025.

The San Francisco Giants have been reportedly uninterested in chasing high-priced arms in MLB free agency, but a bat like Kyle Schwarber could be more to their liking.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Giants are among the teams that have checked in on free agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who finished the 2025 NL MVP race in second place behind Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.

Schwarber, who will be entering his age-33 season in 2026, mashed a career-high and National League-leading 56 home runs while driving in an MLB-best 132 runs during the 2025 campaign with the Philadelphia Phillies.

While the San Francisco Giants appear to be kicking the tires on Kyle Schwarber’s availability, the Phillies are motivated to keep their prized slugger this offseason.

Many predict that Kyle Schwarber’s next contract will be in the range of $150 million or higher, with the length of the deal reaching four to five years.

As for San Francisco’s interest, the Giants may be just doing their due diligence on the three-time All-Star.

Last season, the San Francisco Giants swung a blockbuster deal for star third baseman and designated hitter Rafael Devers, who is still owed $254 million over the next eight seasons. If the Giants were to add Schwarber, Devers would have to log most of his playing time at first base, which would block top prospect Bryce Eldridge, who will be competing for a starting spot come Spring Training.
