New San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello will have some tenured experience on his staff in his first big league season.
USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale reports the team has hired Ron Washington as its infield coach.
Former Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington is finalizing a deal with the San Francisco Giants to be their major league infield coach.
Washington, an infield guru, could have the most impact of any free agent this winter with his expertise.

Washington, 73, spent the past two seasons as the Los Angeles Angels manager. He left the team in late June to undergo a heart procedure and did not return. Prior to joining the Halos, Washington spent eight seasons as skipper of the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014, winning the American League pennant in 2010 and 2011.
A native of New Orleans, Washington spent 11 seasons on the Oakland Athletics staff from 1997 to 2006 and won a World Series in 2021 as the third base coach of the Atlanta Braves.
An infielder in his playing days, Washington appeared in 564 games over a 10-year big league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland and Houston Astros from 1977 to 1989.
Vitello, 47, was named Giants manager in October, succeeding the fired Bob Melvin. The native of St. Louis became the first man to directly transition from college baseball to major league management without previous experience. Vitello spent the past eight seasons as manager at Tennessee, winning a College World Series in 2024.
