The Red Sox traded one of their top prospects to the Pirates to help boost their rotation as part of a five-player trade Thursday night.
Outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia and pitcher Jesus Travieso were shipped to the Steel City in exchange for right-hander Johan Oviedo and minor leaguers Tyler Samaniego and Adonys Guzman, the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey reported.
Oviedo, 27, became a solid starter for the Pirates after he was picked up at the 2022 trade deadline. He started nine games in 2025, striking out 42 batters and posting a 3.57 ERA over 40 1/3 innings while averaging 95.5 mph on his fastball.

The righty underwent Tommy John surgery that prevented him from pitching the entire 2024 season before he then dealt with a lat strain while building up during spring training.
He didn’t make his season debut this year until early August.
Arguably, the biggest piece of the trade headed to Pittsburgh is Garcia.
Garcia was ranked third by MLB Pipeline among Red Sox prospects and is listed No. 85 among MLB’s top 100 prospects overall.
Garcia has also earned the nickname “The Password” due to his hard-to-spell first name.
In an interview with NESN earlier this year, Garcia’s father, John, explained where he had first heard the nickname.

“We learned about the nickname through social media,” he said. “We already knew that nobody from our hometown had ever played in MLB. It’s huge.”
His brother Johanfran, also in the Red Sox system, is nicknamed “the Username.”
The trade has not been made official by either team.
