Alex Bregman reportedly has a serious suitor in Chicago this offseason.

With the expectation that Kyle Tucker is going to sign elsewhere, the Cubs will have their eye on Bregman, according to The Athletic.

The Cubs made Bregman a four-year, $115 million offer last offseason, per Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma. Though Chicago was trying to keep its payroll under control, Bregman was deemed a “special exception” to the budget.

Now, they’re readying to make another run at the All-Star third baseman.

“After a failed bid to sign Bregman last spring training, the Cubs have shown renewed interest in the All-Star third baseman, according to sources briefed on the club’s offseason planning,” Mooney and Sharma write. “While certain elements of the roster have changed — and the organization has different momentum from its first playoff appearance since 2020 — the logic that drove the Cubs to pursue Bregman then still applies now.”

The 31-year-old infielder was an excellent fit in Boston last season, hitting .273 with an .821 OPS, while manager Alex Cora raved about his impact in the clubhouse.

Bregman opted out of his deal with the Red Sox last month, hoping to cash in on a more lucrative free agent market than a year ago. The Athletic’s Tim Britton projects Bregman to land a six-year, $171 million contract this time around.
