The Philadelphia Phillies may need to look elsewhere for outfield help. Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting Minnesota Twins star Byron Buxton would consider waiving his no-trade clause to facilitate a move out of Minneapolis. With the Phillies often mentioned as a logical landing spot, speculation grew quickly that the former Gold Glove center fielder could be a target.

However, that momentum appears to have slowed. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Twins have shut down trade discussions involving Buxton and plan to keep him for the foreseeable future. While Minnesota’s stance could certainly change as the offseason progresses, the current expectation is that Buxton will remain in Minneapolis–St. Paul—at least for now.

For the Phillies, Buxton would have represented an intriguing gamble. His elite defense and athleticism have never been in question, but injuries have consistently interrupted stretches of All-Star-level production. With Philadelphia still weighing outfield and offensive upgrades, Buxton seemed like a high-ceiling solution.

Instead, Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies’ front office will continue surveying the market. Buxton remains in Minnesota, and for now, a potential fit in Philadelphia is on hold.
